Robert Curgenven & Kris Keogh - To the End of the
Earth, Studio (cabaret) Friday 16th April 2010 |
|
|
This show brings together two local luminaries working at the cutting
edge of electronica and sonic art. While artist-in-residence at Milan’s O'Artoteca, Robert Curgenven
developed his Transparence dubplate, using decaying
vinyl to produce a unique physical response from the
room, air and amplification - creating deep undertones
and blossoming overtones via these manifold resonances. Kris Keogh is well-known locally through his electronic
project Cooperblack whose various releases have garnered
critical acclaim and airplay - in 2007 he topped the
Triple J Unearthed electronic charts. Returning to the
Studio, Kris Keogh will be performing a mixed electronic
and acoustic set, including music for harp. Tickets on sale
to DEC members from Monday 1st March and to the general
public from Monday 8th March. |

Barry Brown and the GetDown, Studio (cabaret)
Friday 23rd April
2010 |
|
|
Think
classic funk. What do you get? James Brown. Think
bootylicious grooves. What do you get? Barry White. Mix in some seriously dysfunctional upbringing, add the
intense tropical heat of Australia's frontier north,
squirt in a dash of white boy soul brother style... and
you have Barry Brown and the GetDown, who are bringing
their afromakin’, bootyshakin’, funkalicious dance party
extravaganza to town. After
stunning Darwin audiences with their blitzkrieg of sweet
and sweaty funk during the Build-Up, Barry Brown and the
GetDown return to do it again on the big stage - and in
the airconditioning! Patrons are encouraged to dress to move in the groove.
(Special costume door prize - a date with Barry!)
Tickets on sale to DEC members from Monday 1st March and
to the general public from Monday 8th March. |

Lennon - Nowhere Man, Playhouse Friday 23rd April
2010 |
|
|
The legend
of John Lennon remains as strong today as it was during
his life as his music and message continue to touch and
fascinate millions. This tribute to the man and his
music features some of the best in the business singing
the Lennon songbook and recounting his life before, with
and after The Beatles. From his motherless childhood and
his first meeting with Paul McCartney, through the
hysteria of Beatlemania and the controversial break-up
of the band, to his solo career and his tragic death in
1980, Lennon’s eventful life and the genius of his music
are re-lived and re-created. Featuring authentic
costumes and original instruments, William Croft (from
Beatle Magic) faithfully re-creates Lennon with all his
charisma and his contradictions. A captivating and
inspiring evening of music and story-telling, bringing
alive the most fascinating of the Beatles. Tickets on sale
to DEC members from Monday 1st March and to the
general public Monday 15th March. |

The Folding Wife, Studio Wednesday 5th May 2010 |
|
|
Grace, a young Filipina
woman, is placing her family to rest by packing them up
in little boxes. Alone, equipped only with anecdotes,
she breathes life to the two women of her family who
have led her to the Australian landscape. There is
Clara, the grand matriarch who remembers an opulent
Philippines of the Spanish era and is comforted by
long-gone wealth and an impeccable breeding. Her
daughter Dolores is a disappointment, having given birth
to Grace after a scandalous affair. For Clara all their
problems would be solved if only her daughter would
marry a foreigner – preferably an American. This is a deeply moving
story exploring the external and internal landscape that
propels people to scatter across the face of the earth
and the consequences it has for personal and cultural
identity.
Tickets on sale
to DEC members from Monday 8th March and to the
general public Monday 15th March. |
