Magnificent Mendelssohn - Saturday 7th March
2009 2009
marks both the twentieth anniversary of the Darwin
Symphony Orchestra and the bicentenary of Felix
Mendelssohn’s birth in Hamburg, Germany. In this
first concert of the DSO’s 2009 season, ‘classical
romantic’ Mendelssohn will be revered with
performances of works such as Scottish Symphony,
derived from strong impressions of his travels
around the British Isles; concert overture Ruy
Blas, commissioned for a charity performance of
Victor Hugo’s tragic drama of the same name; and
Violin Concerto in E minor, one of the most
loved of Mendelssohn’s compositions.
Guest conductor Warwick
Potter, one of Australia’s rising stars in
conducting, returns to Darwin to give you a glimpse
of his dynamic, interpretative, and eloquent style.
Potter will share the stage with brilliant young
soloist and fellow Western Australian, Kathryn Shinnick, who became a casual member of the West
Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) at the tender
age of seventeen. To complete the line up of the
DSO’s guests, Tasmanian based concertmaster, Penny
Reiss, will return to Darwin for this occasion.
Easter Concert (with Darwin Chorale) - Friday
10th April 2009 2009 marks 25 years since the Darwin Chorale performed Bach’s
St John Passion at Christ Church Cathedral,
under the direction of its inaugural Musical
Director, Dr Dean Patterson. It was an exciting time
for this small choral group that has since grown to
become the choral counterpart to the Darwin Symphony
Orchestra.
This concert, with guest conductor Nicholas Routley
and soprano Belinda Montgomery, will treat you to
the exquisitely rich juxtaposition of full vocal and
orchestral harmonies. The stage will be alive with
more than one hundred choristers and musicians
performing Verdi’s Stabat Mater, Dona
Nobis Pacem from Bach’s Mass in B Minor
as well as the comparatively new work from Paul
McCartney – Ecce Cor Meum. The Orchestra will
also perform the Good Friday Music from
Wagner’s Parsifal and introduce Routley’s
newest work Aria and Funeral March from
Mahabharata for soprano soloist and orchestra.
Don’t miss this stirring event. |
